Certification by Similarity (CbS)

If you have multiple products with similar functionality, the Certification by Similarity (CbS) program may allow you to certify a single primary device and have all applicable variant devices certified at no additional cost, saving you time, money, and effort.

If your device and its variants meet the CbS requirements listed below, only the primary device will be required to undergo full certification testing. SmartThings may contact you if further information is required, or if your devices do not qualify for the CbS program.

Hub Connected Devices

In order to be considered for CbS, Hub Connected Devices must contain the same:

• Brand
• Edge Driver Profile, including the same sub-driver if applicable

Cloud Connected Devices

In order to be considered for CbS, Cloud Connected Devices must contain the same:

• Brand
• Device Category
• Connector ID
• Device Profile and Device Handler Type

Note that Cloud Connected Devices may have different Device Profiles and still be considered for Certification by Similarity. This is possible only if the Capabilities for any variant devices are a subset of the Primary Device. If any variant device has additional Capabilities, partial testing is required for the variant device(s).

To apply for CbS, first submit your primary device for certification in the Certification Console. After submitting your primary device, submit each variant device for certification. When submitting each variant device for certification in the Console, you will have the opportunity to indicate that your product qualifies for CbS.

All devices must be submitted through the Console regardless of whether they qualify for CbS.
